Curb Appeal 101
Curb Appeal 101
Armstrong’s downtown is a heritage business district with a walkable main street. Storefronts that look cared-for draw foot traffic from residents and the visitors who come for festivals and the IPE. Curb appeal is a real economic factor here.
This page covers four things that matter most for downtown Armstrong businesses. Most are quick fixes that pay off year-round.
Make your address visible from the street
Emergency dispatch sends help to a physical address, not a business name. If the front of the building does not show clear, large-format numbers visible from across the street, first responders can lose minutes finding the right door. Check the front of your building against the view from a passing car. Replace faded numbers, add lighting if needed, and make sure the address is not obscured by signage or seasonal decorations.
Match the heritage downtown character
Armstrong’s downtown has a recognizable heritage character with brick storefronts, awnings, and large street-facing windows. Renovations and signs that fit that character keep the downtown working as a unified shopping district.
- Coordinate awnings and signage with neighbouring storefronts
- Expose original architectural features that earlier renovations may have covered
- Repair and repaint faded or peeling exterior paint
- Use clear glass at the storefront so window displays are visible from the sidewalk.
Storefront essentials
The basics make the biggest difference.
- Signage that is readable from across the street
- Window displays that turn over with the seasons
- Lighting that works at dusk in the long fall and winter evenings
- Clean entryways, swept sidewalks, and tidy public-facing amenities.
More resources
For general retail merchandising and customer experience advice, provincial resources cover the broader topic better than the chamber can. The chamber focuses on the Armstrong-specific angles.
- Small Business BC for retail and merchandising
- Community Futures North Okanagan for local funding and start-up advice.
