Township of Spallumcheen

The Township of Spallumcheen sits in the North Okanagan, between Vernon and Enderby, and surrounds the separately incorporated City of Armstrong. It was incorporated on July 21, 1892, making it the oldest rural municipality in the British Columbia Interior. The township tagline is Farming Comes First.

Name origin

The name Spallumcheen comes from a word in the Shuswap (Secwepemc) language. Two meanings appear in the historical record: flat mouth and meadow flat. The same root names the Shuswap River and the Spillimacheen River in the Columbia Valley.

A working agricultural community

Most of the land in Spallumcheen is in the Agricultural Land Reserve. Working farms are the economic foundation of the township, with hay, dairy, beef, hops, vegetables, pork, and eggs produced across the valley.
