Arts & Culture

LOCAL ARTS & CULTURE

This region supports the arts in some unexpected ways. It isn't surprising to find the works of local artists at the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Art Gallery, which is also a great spot to learn about local history - including the very colourful character for whom Armstrong is named.

'The Heart of Country' is a pretty obvious location for an renowned quilting store, Pleasant Valley Quilting. But the major cultural attraction is actually live theatre.  Armstrong is home to two theatre companies - one professional and one amateur.

The Asparagus Community Theatre, is a group of amateur actors who regularly garner recognition at the Ozone Drama Festival. They present several performances each year, including a popular family Christmas show.

Caravan Farm Theatre is exactly what the name implies, a professional theatre experience, held on a farm. With more than 30 years of productions, this company is one of the premier outdoor theatre companies in Canada. Summer is the marquee season, but there is  also a special autumn event, The Walk of Terror, and hardy drama fans love the moonlit snowscape of the winter production. Since 2011, Caravan has also featured several 'Market Days' at the farm featuring live music, produce, art and fun for the family.

From June - August, Valley First Music in the Park presents the sounds of live music at Memorial Park on Pleasant Valley Road. From Jazz to Folk, Blues to Rock 'n' Roll - the music will stir your soul. Bring your dinner or snacks and mingle with the locals. Don't forget your lawn chair and a non-perishable food for the food bank!

Art isn't just found at the Art Gallery - several businesses feature local art on their walls - including Rogers Foods and The Brown Derby Cafe. You can even purchase a piece of art or other locally crafted products to remind you of your trip to Armstrong Spallumcheen here at the Visitor Centre.

Antiques and collectibles abound in the community too - everything from farm implements to fine furnishing and books. There are four local antique stores that are great places to search out those hard-to-find items - The Bargain Bin and Kindale Thrift Store also have untold treasures.
